Today’s
Kirkbymoorside,
a Danish name meaning
"Church by
the moorside",
is a quiet market
town with a wide
main street cobbled
on either side.
The wealth and history
that surrounds this
little town is reflected
in the fine Georgian
houses and welcoming
hostelries that
flank the main street.
A walk up Vivers
Hill, originally
the site of one
of Kirkbymoorside's
two castles, offers
a wonderful view
over the town and
of the Vale of Pickering.
The town comes
alive on Wednesdays,
as market traders
sell fine produce
from their stalls
and locals gather
to exchange gossip.
You may even catch
the town’s
excellent brass
band, which has
won many accolades
and regularly plays
at events in the
area.
Just a few miles
north of Kirkbymoorside
you can find the
Ryedale Folk Museum
at Hutton-le-Hole,
a collection of
rescued and restored
historic buildings
which display the
area’s rich
cultural history,
and the vast wild
heather moorland
of the North York
Moors. |
