The
attractive market
town of Guisborough
is set in rural
surroundings and
is the northern
gateway town of
the North York Moors.
The town’s
skyline is dominated
by a ruined Augustinian
Priory, founded
in 1119 by Robert
De Brus of Skelton,
and is an outstanding
example of Gothic
architecture.
Like so many towns
in North Yorkshire,
the town is centred
upon a busy market
street, where today
you will find a
curious eighteenth
century market cross
decorated with a
sundial and weather
vane.
As well as market
stalls on Tuesdays,
Thursdays and Saturdays.
Guisborough also
boasts a Speciality
Market on the second
Saturday of the
month, where 20
to 30 traders come
from all over the
North East to sell
such delicacies
as Yorkshire Punch,
smoked trout, homemade
savoury pies, speciality
sausages, and local
confectionery.
Being on the edge
of open countryside
there are many opportunities
to get out and about.
Self-guided walks
from the Guisborough
Forest & Walkway
Centre are easy
to get hold of,
as well as guided
walks throughout
the season. |
